The film festival from 10 to 15 June 2025
The glaciers in question
Out of competition
Summary
A team of glaciologists is seeking to unlock the secrets of one of Greenland’s largest glaciers using an underwater robot. The Petermann Glacier is a monster seventy kilometres long and twenty kilometres wide. An Arctic Grand Canyon, four hundred kilometres from the nearest village, which becomes a crystal trap when the wind picks up. The expedition is led by Éric Rignot, a French-American glaciologist. A NASA collaborator, his international reputation allows him to fight in space and at both poles to alert politicians and the public to the danger posed by rising sea levels. For a year, the film crew followed him in his Lutte des Glaces (Battle of the Ice) – as epic as a Jules Verne novel. A committed documentary that reconciles the marvellous with scientific adventure.
As part of UNESCO’s International Year of Glaciers, we want to highlight a worrying phenomenon: the accelerating melting of glaciers in the Arctic and the world’s great mountain glaciers. In addition to the screening of Florent Muller’s film, La lutte des glaces (The Battle of the Ice), we are bringing together two glaciologists to take stock of the latest developments.
