The Future of Climbing

Titre du film : Le futur de l’escalade

In competition

Summary

With the proliferation of indoor climbing gyms and the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games, climbing – long a counter-cultural movement – is undergoing a profound transformation and facing a major paradox. On the one hand, climbing gyms are experiencing a surge in popularity, while on the other, natural climbing sites are under serious threat. What vertical legacy will we leave to future generations? Is outdoor climbing destined to disappear? What will the future hold for climbing? Led by Cédric Lachat the film provides an overview of this counter-culture, which has recently become a social phenomenon.

Following the premiere of the film by Guillaume Broust, we will discuss the future and evolution of climbing with some leading figures from the sport.

Our pick

Guillaume Broust puts his directing talents to work on a thought-provoking film. Where is climbing headed? With his sidekick and brilliant troublemaker Cédric Lachat in the role of the bad climber, Guillaume’s film sometimes flirts with social commentary but remains firmly rooted in lived experience. Brilliant.
