Summary
On June 28, 1870, Meta Brevoort attempted the first ascent of La Meije. Choosing to climb via the Doigt de Dieu (Finger of God), she realised too late that the true summit, the Grand Pic de la Meije, was just a few metres higher. Despite this, reaching the Doigt de Dieu was a remarkable feat, considered impossible at the time. Meta Brevoort established herself as a pioneer of mountaineering, conquering numerous peaks and challenging established norms. In a compelling tribute, mountaineer Maria Granberg retraces her steps and delves into the legacy of a woman largely forgotten by the history of mountaineering.

Festival highlight
It was a close call for this woman to achieve the first ascent of La Meije, one of the most beautiful and coveted peaks in the Alps, right under the (well-groomed) nose of the famous Gaspard. A century and a half later, we are filled with admiration and a touch of shame that such a woman doesn’t hold a more prominent place in the pantheon of mountaineers!
